It was also called a Lunitsa, its a female symbol and such jewels were worn by Slavic and Viking women for fertility, good luck, protection, and a happy life.The crescent pendant was very popular in early slavic society and also a well known decorative form of adornment in many cultures. Varying widely in shape, decoration, jewellery technique, place, and function, but they all share the same crescent shape. Many see them as protective pagan amulets despite their dating to the pre-Christian or Christian period. Crescent pendants were a distinctive form in early Rus’ culture and East Slavs territory. Datable to the 9th century and were frequently found in deposits with crosses. A well known find from the territory of Rus’ had lunula and the cross together as one and the same ornament showing evidence of religious syncretism.Similar designs were seen throughout many countries.
