DescriptionThe Advent wreath or Advent candle holder is a Christian tradition. It symbolizes the passage of the four weeks of Advent in the liturgical calendar of the Western church. It is traditionally a Lutheran practice, although it has spread to many other denominations. Personally I think it’s kinda like a bastardized Yule Log. I assume it’s just another stolen and repurposed pagan tradition. The concept of the Advent wreath originated among German Lutherans in the 16th century. (Hello Yule Log) The custom of burning the Yule Log goes back to even before medieval times. Believed to be a Nordic tradition that occurred during Winter Solstice festivals in Scandinavia and other parts of northern Europe such as Germany. It was not until three centuries later that the modern round Advent wreath took shape later becoming candle wreaths.Usually an evergreen wreath with four candles, sometimes with a fifth white candle in the centre. It begins on the First Sunday of Advent, the lighting of a candle can be accompanied by a Bible reading, devotional time and prayers. An additional candle is lit on each subsequent Sunday until, by the last Sunday of Advent, all four candles are lit. Some Advent wreaths include a fifth, candle which is lit on Christmas Eve or Christmas Day. The custom originated in family settings but has also become widespread in public worship. The four candles typically represent hope, peace, joy, and love. While white or pure beeswax candles can be used. The traditional colours are three purple and one pink candle, which would be lit on the third Sunday of Advent, known as Gaudete Sunday.Candles not included.Vintage
