We’re thrilled to release an ancient carol revisited with secular lyrics penned by violinist Maya Magub. In this version, Maya brings an ‘earth-focused’ approach to Holiday storytelling, responding to the current widespread environmental disruption whilst keeping the much-loved Celtic carol seasonal in sentiment.Featuring vocals from Clara Heffes.Maya Magub writes: “The Wexford Carol is an ancient Medieval, Irish carol from Enniscorthy. It originated at least 500 years ago, possibly more, and survived for centuries through the oral tradition before being written down. The lyrics, in Irish and then English, would have evolved over time, and I found myself again rewriting the words to feel relevant to today, and to everyone. It is still a Christmas Carol (it’s about Christmas and the end of the year) but the message is more generally about the Earth – what it has given us and what we owe to it. The themes are nature, peace, kindness and love; everything we need right now. And this carol has the perfect melody for expressing nostalgia and yearning, for looking back over the old year, but also for looking forward with hope to the new year.”
