Mood rings have intrigued people for decades, serving as a unique piece of jewelry and a conversation starter about the wearer’s emotional state. Mood rings first made their appearance in the 1970s. Captivating the public with their claim to reflect the emotions of the wearer through colour changes. Mood rings are a trendy temperature-sensitive, colour-changing ring marketed to change colour according to your current mood when worn. Their invention in the 1970s reflected the greater cultural focus on spirituality and self-reflection, particularly in the USA. Colour-changing mood rings have been around for nearly 50 years, with spikes in popularity at their release in the 1970s and during the 1990s.The idea to use thermosensitive elements in jewellery first arose from the American jeweller Marvin Wernick in 1974 after reading a magazine article about the use of liquid crystal elements in medical thermometers. He found a compound that changed colour from black to green, blue and deep blue in the range of 32–38 °C and developed a technique for using it in pendants and rings. Sales began in February. Wernick called the jewellery “magical”, and his promotional materials claimed that the colour of the pendant or ring is an indicator of the warmth of the wearer’s character. Since Wernick did not patent the invention, other jewellers adopted the idea and began to produce their thermosensitive jewellery. Soon someone came up with a successful term “mood ring”, which was quickly adopted by all manufacturers, including Wernick.
