DescriptionIn Slavic folklore the good souls of ancestors are said to settle on mallow flowers. Protecting the inhabitants of the home. This star flower reminds us of our spiritual and ancestral roots. The lateral star in Ukrainian folk pysanka type is known as a “storchova ruzha/rozha”. The eight pointed star is know in Ukrainian folk art as a “ruzha (rozha). In theory it is thought to be an abstract mallow flower.Once flipped over you will see “Kalyna” (pronounced “kah-li-nah”) the Ukrainian word for the highbush cranberry. Also called “Guelder” Rose (Viburnum opulus var. roseum) in English. Thoroughly embedded in Ukrainian folklore, it is prominently featured in many folk songs, and sayings. It also appears as motifs in embroidery and traditional decorative art. The Cree refer to the kalyna as “nepiminana,” a plant they and settlers from Eastern Europe, put to a wide variety of medicinal uses.
