DescriptionThe word pysanka comes from the verb pysaty, “to write” or “to inscribe,” as the designs are not painted on, but written with beeswax. Many superstitions are attached to pysanky. Thought to protect households from evil spirits, catastrophe, lightning, and fires. Eggs with spirals were the most powerful, as unholy creatures would get trapped within the spirals forever. Blessed pysanky would be used to find demons hidden in the dark corners of the home. The eggs held powerful magic and had to be disposed of properly. If a witch got a hold of one she could use the shell to gather dew, and dry up a cow’s milk. The witch could also use bits of the shell to poke people and sicken them. Shells had to be ground up very fine or broken into pieces and tossed into running streams. One Hutsul myth tells of the power of decorated eggs. They are a ward against a dragon of evil that is chained to a cliff. If not enough pysanky are created the monster will escape and evil will take over the world.Place in the home to keep evil spirits at bay and to bring prosperity to your household. You will receive the pictured Ukrainian Canadian Ceramic EggVintage 1960’s
