Hallowtide is a time to remember the dead, including ancestors, beloved dead, and familiar spirits.In pre-christian Slavic lands, the dead were honoured during Dziady (Forefathers’ Eve) and were believed to return from the underworld towards the end of October. This celebration with the spirits of the afterlife took place in the home, and in graveyards where great fires were built to provide light for the deceased and for them to warm themselves. Offerings of fire, food, and drink were left for ancestors and dead souls to fortify them. Everyone would then go to the cemetery to clean the graves of their ancestors and leave offerings and light bonfires.
