DescriptionIn Slavic folklore, every home hosts a Domovik or Domovoi, believed to embody the soul of one or more deceased family members. This belief integrates him into ancestor worship traditions. Traditionally, he resides at the threshold under the entrance, in the attic, or in the hearth behind the stove. Families take care not to disturb the smoldering remains of fires to prevent their ancestors from falling through the grate. When satisfied, the Domovik acts as a guardian and assists with chores, feeds animals, and protects those living in the home. The Ukrainian word “Oberih” describes this protective act and can extend to items that require safeguarding; thus, an “oberih” refers to “an item that protects.”In Slavic folk magic, practitioners used brooms for attraction spells and banishing. Any mundane broom, when directed with specific intentions, becomes a magical talisman, a protective charm, and a crucial ritual tool. People employed brooms in household, fertility, and healing magic. Many superstitions surround their use. In my Ukrainian family, no one sweeps after dark because it brings bad luck and offends the Domovoi. They believed that if children were beaten with brooms, they would stop growing due to the accumulation of physical and spiritual dirt. Striking anything would transfer that negativity to the person involved. Over time, brooms tend to gather negativity, especially when used for cleansing and banishing purposes.To attract a Domovoy, go outside of your house wearing your best clothing. Speak the following incantation aloud: “Dedushka Dobrokhot, please come into my house and tend the flocks.” When moving to take your domovoi with you, make an offering and say “Domovoy! Domovoy!
